ABSTRACT: Clinical and mycological study of one hundred cases of pityriasis versicolor, confirmed by direct KOH technique was carried out at Government Medical College, Patiala, as no such study has been previously reported from the the State of Punjab. According to this study, 75.0 per cent cases were in the age group of 11.30 years and the sex ratio was approximately two males to one female. On clinical examination, the predominant sites of involvement were chest, back, neck, shoulders and abdomen. Culture was done in all the cases on neutral Sabouraud's dextrose agar and the culture was positive in only six cases. Additionally in thirty-five cases, the culture was also done on Sabouraud's dextrose agar layered with olive oil and the isolation rate increased to 17.0 per cent. These 100 cases were divided into four similar groups of twenty five cases each and were treated with different regimes as 20.0 per cent sodium thiosulphate, 20.0 per cent sodium thiosulphate plus miconazole nitrate, miconazole nitrate and tolnaftate. Out of these, 20.0 percent sodium thiosul. fat and miconazole nitrate combination was found to be most effective. |
