Hepatitis B surface antigen status in leprosy patients

ABSTRACT: Two hundred leprosy patients consisting of one hundred tuberculoid type, ninety five lepromatous type and five cases of ENL (type II reaction) were studied for detection of Australia antigen. There was 11 percent Positivity of hepatitis B-surface antigen in lepromatous leprosy in contrast to 6 percent positivity in normal control individuals. None of the tuberculoid cases revealed the presence of Australia antigen. Association of HBs antigenemin was remarkably high (60 percent) in ENL (type II reaction)
