ABSTRACT: Betamethasone dipropionate 0.05 percent ointment and betamethasone valerate 0.1 percent ointment were compared in a multicentric randomised double-blind, comparative clinical study involving 281 patients with psoriasis and other steroid responsive dermatoses. Betamethasone dipropionate ointment produced significantly faster onset of action as well as a significantly greater response. Neither ointment produced any adverse effects.

ABSTRACT: The prevalence of chronic arsenical dermatosis from drinking tube well is more and more recognized in different villages of West Bengal. A total of 1068 cases have been recorded so far by the School of Tropical Medicina Calcutta, since 1st case diagnosed in July, 1983. 36 villages of 6 districts have been found to be affected so far with the disease. Melanosis (diffuse and spotted) and keratosis (diffuse & punctate in palms, soles and other sites) are the main features of the disease. Cutaneous malignancy was found in 3 out of 1000 cases of chronic arsenical dermatosis. The severity of dermatosis correlated well with concentration of arsenic in the consumed tube well water as well as the duration of arsenic contaminated water consumption. finding of significant concentration of arsenic in nails, hair and skin scales not only confirms the clinical diagnosis but also clinches the diagnosis in doubtfully positive cases and detects the subclinical arsenic toxicity in some of the apparently unaffected members of the affected family.

ABSTRACT: We report herein a patient of tuberous sc'erosis with bilateral papilloedema. Oroacral vitiligo was also present. The co-occurrence of tuberous sclerosis, bilateral papilloedema and oracular vitiligo is rare. In a year long follow-up the papilloedema persisted without affecting the vision and the visual fields of the patient. Cautious monitoring of the condition seems necessary as the disease may sometimes follow a relatively progressive course unlike that in our patient.

ABSTRACT: Eight cases suffering from early syphilis admitted in a hospital for rheumatic complaints. Seven were male and one was female having 24 to 42 years of age. All males gave history of sexual exposures with prostitutes. Five patients did not develop primary chancre. All the patients had persistent low backache and pain in multiple large joints involving ankle, wrist, knee, elbow and shoulder, but small joints were not involved. Duration of symptoms have ranged from 10 days to 98 days. VDRL tests were reactor in all cases. Patients were treated with intramuscular injection of penicillin G sodium 1 mega unit (Mu) six hourly for 10 days followed by 2.4 Mu of benzathine penicillin once a week for two consecutive weeks. All the patients had an uneventful recovery and shown rapid regression of symptoms.
